Project introduction

National plan for desalination and water transfer from the coasts of Chabahar to the eastern provinces of the country

(simultaneous production of water and electricity)

This project has been designed with the intention of desalination and transfer of water from the coasts of Chabahar to the eastern provinces of the country (Sistan and Baluchestan, South Khorasan and Khazasan Razavi) in three general phases with a total volume of 750 million cubic meters per year. The goal of the first phase is to transfer water equivalent to 280 million cubic meters per year, to provide high-efficiency drinking, industrial, mining and agricultural uses in the eastern provinces of the country by constructing a telescopic transmission pipeline with a diameter of 2200-1800-1600 mm. Operations in the second and third phases are on the agenda based on the studies conducted so far with the same capacity as the first phase. It must be noted that they will be implemented in accordance with the time requirements and examining the capacities and needs of the east of the country. Moreover, the mplementation of the initial phase of the project to meet the needs of the coast, including mining, steel and other industries in the region and part of the drinking water of Chabahar city with a volume of 100,000 cubic meters is on the agenda.

Project goals

Eliminate the problem of shortage of drinking water, as well as the water needed for industry and agriculture in the east of the country from sustainable water resources (unconventional waters of the south of the country “Oman Sea” and pay special attention to the development of industry and mining in the eastern provinces.

  • Activate and make use ofthe potentials of the private sector.
  • To rely on local capacities through the construction of power plants and water desalination using modern technology and with the aim of localization and transmission of fresh water and electricity needed for high-yield industry and agriculture
  • To create job and make use of the capacities and potentialities of local people, as well as the involvement of the private sector
  • To create a very valuable opportunity to access ocean waters through the Chabahar Free Zone, as well as creating infrastructure for water and electricity in the east of the country.
  • Increase energy production efficiency (above 80%).
  • Creating a suitable situation for activating the mining industry in the eastern corridor of the country, considering the creation of appropriate infrastructure and enthusiasm for private sector investors.
  • Maintanance of sustainable security in the east of the country through job creation, wealth creation, population stabilization in the eastern part of the country.

Technical specifications of the project

Water extraction, desalination and power generation facilities: This project is under construction with the intention of producing desalinated water up to a capacity of 2,400,000 cubic meters per day (750 million cubic meters per year) near Chabahar city between Ramin and Kacho villages with the following specifications:

Offshore water extraction facilities with a capacity of saline water intake up to 7.2 million cubic meters per day, which is transferred to the intake structure by gravity from a distance of 1.3 km and a depth of 20 meters.

The first phase consists of 8 desalination facilities, each with a capacity of 100,000 cubic meters per day, which includes pre-treatment facilities, chemical injection, clarification unit with dissolved air flotation, two-layer filtration unit, desalination unit and energy recovery systems.

24 water storage tanks for fresh water storage and transfer to the pumping station, each with a capacity of one hundred thousand cubic meters.

The required power of desalination units in the first phase is equal to 210 MW.

Geographical area of the project:

The present project of water extraction and desalination plant is located near the village (Ramin) located in the east of Chabahar city. The water transfer system will start from the desalination facility and will respectively meet the water needs of the provinces along the route that passes through the provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan, South Khorasan and Khorasan Razavi
